SS United States is a retired ocean liner built between 1950 and 1951 for the United States Lines at a cost of $79.4 million (equivalent to $829 million in 2021). The ship is the largest ocean liner constructed entirely in the United States and the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic in either direction, retaining the Blue Riband for the highest average speed since her maiden voyage in 1952; she still holds the title today. She was designed by American naval architect William Francis Gibbs and could be converted into a troopship if required by the Navy in time of war. United States maintained an uninterrupted schedule of transatlantic passenger service until 1969 and was never used as a troopship.

The ship has been sold several times since the 1970s, with each new owner trying unsuccessfully to make the liner profitable. Eventually, the ship's fittings were sold at auction, and hazardous wastes, including asbestos panels throughout the ship, were removed, leaving her almost completely stripped by 1994. Two years later, she was towed to Pier 82 on the Delaware River, in Philadelphia, where she remains today. How long would the Big U fair in a LIFE AFTER PEOPLE-new1-darker?

1 Week after People[]

As power generators around Philadelphia shut off and lights go out around the city, The S.S. United States sits in permanent darkness along with the Pier it was moored into.

15 Years after People[]

It's been 15 Years after the disappearance of mankind, and the Big U is still laid up in Pier 82, Philadelphia. However, her mooring lines had corroded due to the wind's moisture. All of a sudden, they snap one by one, and S.S. United States is set free from Pier 82 and sent into the open waters of the Delaware River.

50 Years after People[]

The Big U has been moving along the waves in the Delaware River for 35 Years after it has found freedom. However, she is not free from nature just yet. In the 1990's, nearly 30 years after she was retired, her hull had already started corroding while she loses her paint slowly due to her age. Now 50 years after us humans had disappeared, The Big U has became too old and weak to keep herself afloat. Her hull now begins to have water leakages. Her compartments now flood with water and after a few hours, she finally sinks to the bottom of the harbor of Philadelphia.

125 Years after People[]

75 years after The Big U had sunk, her wreck lies on the bottom of Philadelphia's harbor, slowly being eaten away by the waters. Marine life now use the former ocean liner as their new home. Her wreck may have a possibility of surviving as long as R.M.S. Titanic's wreck, which is located deep in the Atlantic Ocean.

250 Years after People[]

The Big U has been slowly deteriorating due to the waters. More marine life had moved in into her insides and covered her hull, turning The Big U into an artificial reef.

500 Years after People[]

It's been years since U.S.S. Arizona's wreck had deteriorated and vanished from existence due to Mother Nature, The Big U's wreck is still being preserved in the waters of Philadelphia, while structures all around Delaware River and in Philadelphia fall apart. She may have a chance of surviving longer than R.M.S. Titanic and H.M.S. Britannic, since both ships had sunk a long time ago, but still had relatively intact superstructures and hulls.
